Meeting of HLC Representatives With Ombudsman

Representatives of the HLC, Sandra Orlović and Marijana Toma, had a meeting today with Ombudsman Saša Janković anent the problems that victims of human rights violations committed during 1990s have to face in the proceedings for the recognition of the status of civilian victims of war.

Sandra Orlović and Marijana Toma pointed out to the Ombudsman the practice used by government authorities to deny the status of civilian victims of war to victims of human rights violations committed during 1990s by members of the police or the army on the territory of the Republic of Serbia because, according to the Law on the Rights of Civilian Victims of War, this status is only granted to victims of “enemy forces”. This legal provision, the representatives of the HLC stressed, points to the fact that there is a difference in Serbia between victims, which is made on unacceptable grounds.

Ombudsman said that the problem that the HLC is pointing to is obvious and that he will take certain measures, which will contribute to its resolution as soon as possible.
