On Wednesday, 24 July 2019, the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) presented its fourth Report on the Implementation of the National Strategy for the Prosecution of War Crimes. In her opening remarks, Ivana Žanić from the HLC pointed out that, as the only non-governmental organisation in Serbia continuously monitoring domestic war crimes trials, the HLC also monitors the implementation of the National Strategy for the Prosecution of War Crimes, and every six months releases reports on the state of implementation of the Strategy.
The Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) has been monitoring and providing support to war crimes trials ever since the first war crimes proceedings conducted in Serbia in 2002. The HLC is the only organization that has been continuously monitoring and analyzing war crimes trials in Serbia and informing the public at home and abroad about them. HLC has been filing criminal complaints against suspected perpetrators and sharing its documentation on war crimes with the Office of the War Crimes Prosecutors (OWCP). Also, the HLC has been identifying witnesses and victims and encouraging them to give evidence in court and thus contribute to achieving justice for past crimes.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee again passed a resolution urging Serbia to bring to justice the killers of the Albanian-American Bytyqi brothers, murdered in 1999 after being detained by Serbian police.
On Wednesday, 24 July 2019, the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) will present its “Fourth Report on the Implementation of the National Strategy for the Prosecution of War Crimes”. The presentation will take place at 12:00 in the Great Hall of the Media Centre (Terazije 3, 2nd Floor).

The Court of Appeals in Belgrade has handed down a judgment reducing the sentence for Ranka Tomić, who was convicted of a war crime against a prisoner of war, from five to three years in prison. The Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) considers that the reasons cited for this sentence reduction humiliate the family of the victim and defeat the purpose of war crimes trials conducted before domestic courts.
