First Municipal Court’s Decision: Republic of Serbia ordered to pay RSD 160.000 for torture of Bosniaks in Prijedor in 1993

The Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) believes that the First Municipal Court’s Decision ordering Republic of Serbia (RS) to pay RSD 160.000 to Sead Rovčanin for torture suffered in 1993 is an insult and does not constitute proper satisfaction for the ordeal Rovčanin was subjected to.

The Supreme Court of Cassation Upholds the Decision in the Dejan Petrović Compensation Lawsuit

BELGRADE – The Supreme Court of Cassation in Belgrade denied the request of the Republic of Serbia to revise a decision handed down by the District Court in Belgrade confirming the first instance decision of the First Municipal Court, which orders the Republic of Serbia to pay one million RSD in non-pecuniary damages each to Radmila and Dragomir Petrović from Belgrade for their emotional suffering caused by the death of their son, Dejan Petrović, who died on the premises of the Internal Affairs Department (OUP) of the Vračar municipality.

State obliged to pay damages to torture victim from 1993

On November 5th 2009, the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) received a judgement rendered by the Belgrade First Municipal Court which ordered Serbia to pay 500,000 RSD in damages to Šefket Hukić, a Bosniak from the village of Ugao, in the municipality of Sjenica. Serbia is ordered to pay damages because of its responsibility for the torture suffered by Šefket Hukić at the hands of members of the Sjenica Police Department in December 1993. HLC, within its support programme for victims of past human rights violations, filed a compensation lawsuit against the Republic of Serbia on behalf of Šefket Hukić on April 18th 2007.

Compensation Lawsuit for Victims from Podujevo Dismissed

The Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) lodged an appeal against the judgment of the First Municipal Court in Belgrade rendered on April 28th 2009 that dismissed the HLC’s lawsuit against the Republic of Serbia which HLC had filed on behalf of 14 Albanian victims of a war crime committed by members of the Scorpions – a reserve unit of the Serbian Ministry of Interior.
