State Responsible for Forcible Mobilization of Refugees

Serbian Supreme Court (SSC) dismissed on 19 July 2006 the state’s demand that the First Municipal Court in Belgrade repeats the procedure concerning the charges filed by the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) during the year of 1998, on behalf of seven forcibly mobilized refugees from Croatia.

Natasa Kandic to Speak at the Inaugural Session of the UN Human Rights Council

Ms Natasa Kandic, Humanitarian Law Center’s Executive Director, has been invited to speak at the inaugural session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on June 22 in Geneva, Switzerland. Ms Kandic has been selected by representatives of 60 non-governmental organisations based in Geneva, in co-operation with a number of regional non-governmental organisations, who also endorsed the invitation. Ms Kandic will be one of only five NGO speakers worldwide to address the historical first session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Serbian Supreme Court Verified Verdict in Case Sjeverin

The Serbian Supreme Court verified on 18 May 2006 the verdict handed down by the Belgrade District Court, by which four members of the “Osvetnici” (Avengers) armed group within the Republic of Srpska Army were convicted to imprisonment because of the kidnapping and murder of 16 Bosniaks from the village of Sjeverin, which took place in the place called Mioče, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in October 1992. Milan Lukić, Dragutin Dragičević, Oliver Krsmanović, and Đorđe Šević were convicted for this crime.

Stones at Freedom of Speech

The Humanitarian Law Center is strongly criticizing the act in which the house of Mirko Đorđević, a Religion Sociologist, was stoned. This happened in the night from 16 to 17 May. The HLC is also calling upon the Serbian Ministry of Interior to undertake all measures necessary to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice as soon as possible.
