Nataša Kandić awarded Peace Prize

Nataša Kandić has become the first laureate of the Kosovo Institute for Peace (KIP) Peace Prize.  During the award ceremony held in Prishtina on November 20, 2012, Ramadan Ilazi, the KIP executive director, stated that the accolade is bestowed in recognition of exceptional work on reconciliation in the Balkans.

The new Executive Director of the HLC

On December 8, 2012, the Executive Board of the HLC appointed Deputy Director Sandra Orlović as the new Executive Director of the NGO.  Marijana Toma, a historian who also “grew up” in the HLC, will assume the duties of the Deputy Director.

High school students from Preševo and Bujanovac in HLC

High school students from Preševo and Bujanovac visited the Humanitarian Law Center on Friday, November 23rd, 2012.The Youth Initiative for Human Rights implements the “Civil Society Advocacy Initiative” project in cooperation with the Institute for Sustainable Communities and USAID. During this study visit to Belgrade, these young individuals had an opportunity to learn about the work of civil society organizations, institutions, cultural centres, and media.

Patrick Ball gave a lecture to students of the Transitional Justice School

Patrick Ball from the Benetech organization Human Rights Data Analysis Group held a lecture to the students of the Transitional Justice School on Wednesday, November 7th, 2012. Patrick Ball spent 20 years creating databases and implementing quantative analyses of the gathered data on human rights violations for the purposes of truth commissions, non-governmental organizations, and international missions of the United Nations in El Salvador, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Peru, East Timor, Kosovo, and other countries.

Students from Preševo and Bujanovac Visited the HLC

Students from Preševo and Bujanovac, who were staying in Belgrade as part of the „Public Advocacy for Civil Society“ project, visited the Humanitarian Law Center on Monday, October 29th, 2012. The project is implemented by the Youth Initiative for Human Rights in cooperation with the USAID Institute for Sustainable Communities. The youth from Preševo and Bujanovac had an opportunity during this visit to learn more about the work of civil society organizations, institutions, cultural centres and media.

Commemoration in Lovas

The 21st anniversary of the war crime committed by members of the Yugoslav People’s Army, the ‘Dusan the Mighty’ paramilitary formation, and members of the local Serb government in Lovas was marked in the village yesterday. Wreaths were laid and candles lit at the memorial monument located in the minefield where 22 Croat residents of Lovas died and 14 others were wounded. Mayor Stjepan Milas stressed that it was important that people never forget what happened. Deputy County Prefect of Vukovar and Srem County, Željko Cirba, underlined the need to know the truth about victims and war crimes, especially for younger generations: “Innocent people died in this field. No one knows why. The truth has to be revealed and we have to remember, so that such crimes do not happen again.”

Transitional Justice School Begins

The second generation of the Transitional Justice School was launched on Saturday, October 13th, 2012, at the premises of the Humanitarian Law Center. The Programme Coordinator, Marijana Toma, opened the school in the presence of some forty students. Throughout the following  two months, students will have an opportunity to hear lectures about  topics related to transitional justice: war crimes trials before local courts and the International Court in The Hague, truth commissions, the RECOM Initiative, the significance of documenting and archiving, and reparations.

SIT Students Visit HLC

Students of the School for International Training (SIT) visited the Humanitarial Law Center (HLC) on Wednesday, September 26th, 2012. The students come from various universities in the United States and they will be staying in Serbia for 15 weeks as part of the SIT peace studies program.

Alpbach Club Students Visit to HLC

Students of the international summer university organized by Alpbach Club Belgrade, a member of the European Forum Alpbach, visited the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) on Wednesday, September 19th, 2012. The students of this school from all of the countries of the South-Eastern Europe have an opportunity to study the organization and policies of the European Union as part of this course.
