Letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations

BH journalists from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Humanitarian Law Center, Humanitarian Law Center – Kosovo, Youth Initiative for Human Rights – Croatia and Youth Initiative for Human Rights – Serbia have sent a letter supported by more than 100 organizations and individuals from the region of the former Yugoslavia, relating the recent developments at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, for the attention of His Excellency, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations.

EULEX delegation visited HLC

Mats Mattsson, Head of the Executive Division of EULEX, and Jarosava Novotna, Chief EULEX Prosecutor, visited the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) on June 25th, 2013. Sandra Orlović, the HLC Executive Director, met with the EULEX delegation on behalf of the Organization. The topics discussed in the meeting were related to the issues of missing persons and the prosecution of war crimes committed during and after the conflict in Kosovo.

Dutch MP visits HLC’s office in the Hague

Harry van Bommel, the member of the Dutch Parlament, has visited the Humanitarian Law Center’s office at the Hague Tribunal on June 21 and met with Nenad Golcevski, HLC’s development director and Mustafa Hadziibrahimovic, a member of the HLC’s team for transfer of Tribunal’s archive. As a member of the Socialist Party (Socialistische Partij) Mr. van Bommel has been an MP since 1998. He is also a member of the Dutch Parlament’s commissions for the foreign affairs and the European Union.

Report on Material Reparation for 2012 Presented

On Wednesday, June 13th, 2013, the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) presented its report on material reparation for the year 2012, titled “Fulfilling the Right for Victims of Human Rights to Seek Reparation Before Serbian Courts – Serving Justice or Trivializing Crimes”. Tanja Drobnjak, an HLC attorney, who represents victims in lawsuits against the state of Serbia, Petar Žmak, Reparation Project Coordinator at the HLC, Dr. Saša Gajin from the Faculty of Law at Union University, and Senad Jusufbegović, a former prisoner at the Šljivovica and Mitovo Polje camps, spoke at the conference. Sandra Orlović, the Executive Director of the HLC, was the Moderator.

Film ‘Education for Reconciliation’

‘Education for Reconciliation’ is a film produced by the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) on the Regional School for Transitional Justice, organized in January 2013, for 25 participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Serbia by HLC, HLC Kosovo and Association Pravnik from B&H. Participants attended a ten-day intensive programme on judicially established facts and war crimes trials, truth commissions, reparations for victims of violence, institutional reforms, roles of media and archives in post-conflict societal reconstruction, and other strategies to achieve reconciliation after a violent conflict. Among the lecturers at the School are most prominent regional experts on transitional justice, culture of memory, rule of law in post-conflict societies, etc. Film ‘Education for Reconciliation’ follows several students of the School, their impressions on the content of the lectures and personal changes they had undergone while being exposed to topics of the School.

Presentation of ‘Serving Justice or Trivializing Crimes: Fulfilling the Right of Victims of Human Rights Abuses to seek Reparation before Serbian Courts 2012 Report’

A press conference anent the publication of the report produced by the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) about the realization of victims’ rights to reparations in judicial proceedings in Serbia for 2012 will be held in the Media Centre (Terazije 3, 3rd floor) on Wednesday, June 12th, 2013 at 12:00.
