HLC Kosovo press release on the occasion of the 11th anniversary of the events of March 2004

fdh_kosovo_logoToday, on 17th March 2014, we mark the eleventh anniversary since the interethnic violence in Kosovo, which was mainly directed towards Serbs and RAE communities. According to the data gathered by the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC), during the three days of violence, 19 lives were lost: 11 Albanians and 8 Se…rbs. At the same time there were many gravely injured, including 170 Serbs, 150 from which were beaten in their homes, while 20 were injured on the streets while fleeing their homes. During the March raid, which lasted from 17th until 19th March 2004, there were 65 UNMIK police officers, 58 officers of the Kosovo Police Service, and 61 members of KFOR forces injured. Besides the human losses, around 800 houses belonging to the Serbian community, 90 from Ashkalia community, and 2 of the ethnic Albanian community, were partially damaged or totally ravaged. At the same time, 36 orthodox churches were burnt or ravaged.

The students, who attend various universities in the United States, will spend 15 weeks in Serbia under the SIT’s Peace Studies Program at the Center for Comparative Conflict Studies of the Faculty of Media and Communications.

The Initial Report by Serbia on the Implementation of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons From Enforced Disappearance (Convention) was discussed at the session of the United Nations Committee on Enforced Disappearances (Committee) held on February 4th and 5th, 2015 after which the Concluding Observations related to the implementation  of the Convention and recommendations for further actions for the purpose of its adequate implementation were announced.

Conference “The role of education in the processes of establishing accountability and reconciliation” held in Belgrade

post_obrazovanjeThe Humanitarian Law Center (HLC), the Humanitarian Law Center Kosovo and the ‘Lawyer’ Association from Sarajevo, in cooperation with the Union University Faculty of Law and the Center for Comparative Studies, organized a conference on the role of education in the processes and strategies of Transitional Justice on February 6th, 2015. The Conference was held at the Union University Faculty of Law with the participation of academic communities from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Serbia, including university professors, researchers and research fellows in the fields of law, history, anthropology, sociology, political sciences, and other sciences and disciplines, as well as representatives of three generations of students of the Regional School of Transitional Justice.

31,600 documents undoubtedly confirm death or disappearance of 13,535 individuals during war in Kosovo

post_prezentacija_KMBThe presentation and evaluation of the Kosovo Memory Book (KMB) Database was held today in the Belgrade Media Centre. The Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) and the Humanitarian Law Center Kosovo joined forces in the production of the KMB Database, containing data on the people who lost their lives  or disappeared in events related to the war in Kosovo in the period January 1st, 1998 – December 31st, 2000. The conference was attended by a large number of media, non-governmental organizations, and local and international institutions and experts.

Presentation of “Rudnica” Dossier

post_dosije_rudnicaOn January 29, 2015 the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) presented the “Rudnica” Dossier. The Dossier offers an insight into the evidence on four crimes committed in April and May 1999 in Kosovo by members of the Yugoslav Army (VJ) and the Ministry of the Interior (MUP), the victims of which were Kosovo Albanian civilians whose bodies were exhumed from the mass grave in Rudnica, as well as to present the evidence which points to those who participated in the operations of transporting and concealing the bodies at secret locations for 15 years.

post_dosije_rudnica_engAt the time of the publication of this Dossier (January 2015), the mortal remains of 52 people were exhumed from Rudnica and identified. DNA analysis conducted on the remains has shown that they belong to Kosovo Albanians killed during the Kosovo conflict in 1999. According to a representative of the Commission on Missing Persons of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, search of the Rudnica site will continue if the relevant institutions come up with new data.

brifing_23.01.2015A briefing discussion regarding the significance of including transitional justice issues into the process of the European integration of the Republic of Serbia was held on January 23rd, 2015 in the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) library. Representatives of the embassies of the European Union (EU) member states and Switzerland, Kosovo’s liaison officer, representatives of the EU Delegation and the OSCE Mission to Serbia, Civil Rights Defenders and National Democratic Institute organizations participated in this meeting.
