The belated dismissal of Miloš Perović is insufficient

Logo_FHPMiloš Perović, the former Head of the Ministry of the Interior (MUP) Protection Unit for Participants in Criminal Proceedings, was dismissed from this position on Friday June 6th, 2014. He had been holding this position since 2008. The Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) holds that his dismissal, even though late, is significant for the reform of the witness protection system in cases of war crimes, but that it has to be followed by serious reforms of the Unit and the protection system.

fokus_ffThe session of the focus group founded to meet the needs of the “Trial of Ratko Mladić and Legacy of the Hague Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia“ research project initiated by King’s College, London, was held on May 27th, 2014 in the Humanitarian Law Center Library. Representatives of non-governmental organizations, students and experts from various fields of interest participated in the work of the Group. The objective of the focus group was to trigger an exchange of opinions, ideas, perceptions, and views regarding the characteristics and course of the trial of Ratko Mladić before the International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

fdh_kosovo_logoThe Humanitarian Law Center Kosovo (HLC Kosovo) expresses its deep disappointment in the institutions of Kosovo, as well as civil society and parts of the media, for allowing the flight of the accused for war crimes against civilian population: Sami Lushtaku, Ismet Haxha and Sahit Jashari from their detention. This case testifies that the justice and security system cannot be seen as serious state institutions, and as such the Kosovo state cannot pretend to be a serious party, or be treated equally and with dignity by the international mechanisms and other states.
