On May 21st, 2015, members of the United States (US) House Committee on Foreign Affairs presented a resolution to the House of Representatives on the significance of establishing responsibility for the murders of US citizens Mehmet (21), Agron (23), and Ylli (25) Bytyqi committed in 1999 in Serbia. The co-sponsors of the resolution underlined that establishing justice in the Bytyqi Brothers case represents a significant factor in determining the further development of relations between the United States of America and the Republic of Serbia.

It is with deep sorrow that the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) must now inform the public that our long-time associate and friend, Attorney Dragoljub Todorović, passed away on May 14th, 2015.
Dragoljub had represented victims and victims’ family members on behalf of the HLC, since the beginning of the war crimes trials in Serbia. He persistently advocated the protection of their rights, thereby offering his contribution to the substantiation of the truth about the kidnapping in Štrpci, the brutal execution of the Bogujevci family in Podujevo, and the crimes committed at Ovčara, Zvornik, Trnovo, and elsewhere. During 1999 and 2000, Dragoljub, together with the HLC’s team of attorneys, defended the Kosovo Albanians unlawfully detained in politically motivated proceedings.
Oleksii Bida, an activist from the Center for Audio-visual Art, was abducted in early May 2014 in his hometown of Luhansk. Members of pro-Russian forces unlawfully detained, interrogated and tortured him for hours. He was released the following day and left Lugansk immediately. Oleksii had previously organized and participated in a number of events in support of the unity of Ukraine. Apart from this engagement, he was not involved in politics nor did he take part in the conflict. This was only one of many instances of human rights violations committed in the territories under the control of pro-Russian forces in Ukraine.

Representatives of the ‘Justice for Peace in Donbas’ Coalition, comprising several human rights organizations from East Ukraine, began their study visit to the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) on Monday, May 11th, 2015. The organizations comprising the ‘Justice for Peace in Donbas’ Coalition have been working intensively on gathering and documenting information on human rights violations and on advocating the rights of the victims of the conflict currently ongoing in the east of Ukraine. Owing to the armed conflict, most of them have been forced during the past year to leave Luhansk and Donetsk and to continue working on documenting human rights violations in the refuge.
