The Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) and the Sandžak Committee for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms organized a seminar titled Transitional Justice – Basic Mechanisms, Challenges and Problems on June 18th in Novi Pazar. Approximately 40 participants, representatives of non-governmental organizations, associations of victims and ethnically cleansed citizens of the Priboj municipality, student associations, local media and individuals, attended the seminar.
BELGRADE, 18 June 2009 — The War Crimes Chamber of the Belgrade District Court, presided by Judge Snežana Nikolić-Garotić, found four members of the Scorpions, a reserve unit of the Serbian Ministry of Interior, guilty of committing a war crime against Albanian civilians on March 28th 1999 in Podujevo, Kosovo, and sentenced Željko Đukić, Dragan Medić and Dragan Borojević to 20 and Miodrag Šolaja to 15 years’ imprisonment.
In recognition of Ms. Kandić’s excellence, dedication and achievements in the field of human rights as a true advocate and protector of human rights and freedoms, Civil Society of Ferizaj bestowed on Ms. Kandic the title: Contributor to Peace and Protector of Freedom.
This award was handed to Ms. Kandić on June 14th 2009 in Ferizaj/Urosevac.
“Ms. Kandić’s role has been fundamental to enhancing tolerance, equality, democracy and understanding among human races. Her sacrifices and tireless work is an inspiration to the younger generation. Ms. Kandić is an archetype and an icon of freedom”, reads the letter from the Civil Society of Ferizaj, signed by Albulena Sadiku.
ORAHOVAC, 13 June 2009 – More than 100 members of the families of the victims participated in a public presentation of the interim results of the register of killed and missing in the municipality of Orahovac/Rahovec in Kosovo.
Organized by the Humanitarian Law Center – Kosovo (HLC-Kosovo), the presentation was opened by the Mayor of the municipality of Orahovac/Rahovec, Qazim Qeska.
Nataša Kandić, Executive Director of the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) sent a letter earlier today to Justice Vesko Krstajić, member of the Trial Chamber of the Belgrade District Court informing him of her decision to stop representing the Bitići/Bytyqi family in the criminal proceedings against the accused Sreten Popović and others because it is her and the Bitići/Bytyqi family’s opinion that the trial is not intended to bring justice to the victims but to protect those who ordered the cold-blooded murder of Agron, Mehmet, and Yllia Bytyqi from criminal responsibility.
