On February 16, 2001, an attack was carried out on a Niš-Ekspres bus in the village of Livadice. The bus, escorted by Swedish KFOR troops, was traveling from the Merdare border crossing toward Podujevo and then toward Gračanica, where passengers planned to commemorate a religious holiday. The attack, carried out using roadside explosives, killed 12 Serbian civilians.
