EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: Presentation of the Analysis of War Crimes Prosecution in Serbia 2004-2013

Logo_FHPOn September 30 2014 the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC) will present the Analysis of War Crimes Prosecution in Serbia 2004-2013. The event will be held in Media Center Belgrade (2nd floor), from 12:00 a.m.

The Analysis encompasses the overview of practice, achievements and problems in the work of the institutions which were responsible for the enforcement of criminal justice in cases of crimes committed during the armed conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, as well as 75 recommendations for the improvement of this process. The Analysis is based on the official information from local institutions and institutions from the region, and the prosecutors and judges acting in cases of war crimes, representatives of the Ministry of the Interior responsible for war crimes investigation and witness protection, defence counsel, representatives of the witness protection unit, non-governmental organizations, victims and witnesses, and other relevant actors, who offered their perspective on all aspects of war crimes trials in Serbia in discussions led with representatives of HLC, gave the key contribution to the production of this Analysis.

The Analysis will serve as a starting point for the consultation on draft strategic guidelines for the prosecution of war crimes in the forthcoming decade. HLC believes that the adoption of a state strategy for the prosecution of war crimes, which would address some key issues of this important social process, but also set objectives and guidelines for the operation of institutions in the period 2015-2025, would contribute greatly to the restoration of the rule of law for the atrocities committed during the 90’s.
