In addition to providing material compensation to victims of human rights violations, states are also obliged to make symbolic gestures aiming at providing the victims satisfaction which may include: an official declaration restoring the dignity, the reputation and the rights of the victim and of persons closely connected with the victim; public apology, including acknowledgement of the facts and acceptance of responsibility; and, commemorations and tributes to the victims.
